Revision Breast Surgery

Don’t Live with Unsatisfactory Results; Correction is Possible with Revision Breast Surgery

Despite our best efforts, not all surgical procedures can go off without a hitch. Although the risks associated with breast augmentation and reconstruction with today’s next-generation implants are relatively low, circumstances can change and complications can occur that leave you dissatisfied with your outcome. Yet you need not live with unsatisfactory results, because correction is possible! Breast revision surgery generally involves the removal and replacement of breast implants and/or the correction of complications that occurred during or after a previous breast augmentation or reconstruction.

A breast implant revision may be performed for various reasons, including:

  • Desire to change your implant or breast size
  • Changes in your breasts as a result of time or weight changes
  • Incidence of misshapen or hardened breasts due to capsular contracture
  • Malposition of the implant
  • So-called “double-bubble deformity”
  • Implant rupture
  • Visible rippling or wrinkling of the implant
  • Scar revision

While the goal of any cosmetic surgery is a successful result, this is not always the case. Dr. Stephen M. Becker, Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon, brings to bear both experience and skill in correcting the dissatisfactory results of previous breast implant surgeries to his patients in the Acloa, Tennessee area.  Dr. Becker and his highly trained staff understand that the need for breast revision surgery can be a frustrating experience.  We are here to listen to your concerns and work with you to develop a treatment plan that is customized for you, as well as offer you our reassurance about our total commitment to providing you with safe, effective results that can—and will—restore your natural and shapely curves.

Breast Implant Revision Options

The best way for us to ensure that your revision surgery corrects the underlying concerns and achieves a successful result is for you to communicate openly with us throughout the entire procedure.  Once we understand what your goals are, we can recommend the best course of action to help you achieve satisfying and beautiful results.  If your augmentation procedure was done recently and you are concerned that the implants are not the correct size, we may encourage you to wait for several months before proceeding; it can take up to six months for the swelling to completely disappear and the implants to settle into their final position.  Other complications such as capsular contracture will likely require more immediate attention.

Breast implant revision procedures are usually done under general anesthesia and can vary in length of time based on the degree of complexity of the procedure.  The exact nature and complexity of the procedure will vary greatly from patient to patient, depending on the root cause(s) of the patient’s dissatisfaction and their aesthetic goals.  Some revision surgeries may involve one or more of the following:

  • Implant Exchange: Involves changing implants to a larger or smaller size or changing the type of implant  (Saline/Silicone/Shaped).
  • Capsulectomy/Capsulotomy: Removes or releases the pocket of scar tissue around the implant to relieve pressure caused by capsule contracture.
  • Capsulorraphy: Adjusts the pocket (capsule) in which the implant sits to address asymmetries or correct implant position.
  • Placement Revision/Pocket Change: Corrects the positioning of the implant by creating a new pocket for the implant, either above or below the muscle. This can be used to achieve better symmetry ,correct double-bubble deformity, bottoming out  and other malposition complications.
  • Breast Lift: Removes excess skin and natural tissue to lift the breast and the nipple areolar complex for patients whose implants have begun to sag or droop.
